Moving Carlos Gonzalez to leadoff has not yet jump-started the left fielder. He continues to struggle to make contact, compiling eight strikeouts in 11 at-bats through the sixth inning Tuesday. The Rockies continue to stress to Gonzalez the importance of better strike zone discipline.

San Diego’s Brad Hawpe provided an explanation for his Captain Morgan facial hair. “I was hitting .080 when I started it. What did it matter at that point?” Hawpe will begin playing more right field with the Padres expected to promote prospect Anthony Rizzo.

Jose Morales caught Ubaldo Jimenez because Rockies manager Jim Tracy wanted to see if the combination would click again after Los Angeles. Morales struggled defensively with a dropped throw and a passed ball.
