Another red flag fire warning is in effect for much of southern Colorado today as crews continue to fight a handful of blazes that have consumed thousands of acres across several counties this week.
On Wednesday, the Bear Springs fire at Fort Carson’s Piñon County Maneuver Site had burned a total of 26,000 acres, while to the west, the Callie Mare fire had consumed about 8,000 acres of the Army training site.
Meanwhile, the Shell and Brice fires, which have burned at least 14,000 acres in Las Animas, Bent and Otero counties, were still uncontained.
A 50-acre fire was threatening homes in the Navajo Mountain Mesa subdivision west of Cripple Creek. Residents and their animals were evacuated, the Teller County Sheriff’s Office said.
