DENVER—The Denver City Council has paid more than $1 million this year to settle complaints against the police department for excessive force.

The latest complaints came Monday when the council voted unanimously to pay $80,000 to settle two excessive force lawsuits.

Brighton volunteer firefighter Jared Lunn will receive $45,000 to settle a federal civil rights case after he said he was beaten after he approached an officer who was off-duty at a bar in December 2009 and made a sarcastic comment.

The Denver Post says the city council also voted to pay $35,000 to Mark Ashford, who said he was beaten by two officers and had to be taken to the hospital following a 2010 incident that occurred while he was walking his dogs.
