The new-look Colorado Rockies high school all-star baseball game — the Futures Game — will be today after the Rockies host the Detroit Tigers in an interleague game at Coors Field.
Previously, the state’s top 40 or 50 seniors were selected, but in 2011 there will be 20 graduated seniors against 20 underclassmen. The change was made in order to better reflect Colorado’s talent in all grades and should make the game more manageable for coaches, with increased chances of playing time.
A panel of Rockies personnel and media, including The Denver Post, selected the 20 seniors. The Rockies’ scouting department chose the underclassmen.
Fans attending the major-league game may stay afterward for a seven-inning game not to exceed two hours.
The five prep head coaches who oversaw state championships last month — Steve Cavnar, Class 5A Regis Jesuit; Mark Swope, 4A Cheyenne Mountain; Danny Bote, 3A Faith Christian; Larry Milligan, 2A Rye; and Rod Thompson, 1A Stratton — will coach the seniors, and the Rockies’ scouting department will guide the underclassmen.
