Phil Holmes usually takes the train into work, but last night he pumped up the tires on his 10-year-old bike and made the 16-mile trek into downtown Denver.

Holmes joined more than 100 bicyclists – some clad in khaki and others decked out in bike gear – in Civic Center Park for the annual Denver Bike to Work Day, sponsored by Denver Regional Council of Governments.

Booths lining the walkway featuring health snacks, helmet fittings, bike tuning and free yoga lessons on the grass.

“I usually take the train, but the train doesn’t help me get rid of the gut,” Holmes said as he laughed and adjusted his helmet.

Holmes said a co-worker convinced him to bike in this morning, but after surviving this trip he plans on peddling in more often.

Bill Janssen has been biking the 2.8 miles from his Denver home to his downtown office for almost 7 years, he said.

“Once I started biking, I found out that I can get door-to-door faster than when I was riding the bus or driving to work,” Janssen said.

Janssen said he hopes Bike to Work Day will inspire other people to ride into work throughout the year.
