COLORADO SPRINGS — Detectives arrested a man Saturday after an early-morning hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist.

Police said 44-year-old William Byas Jr. was riding southbound on the right edge of South Circle Drive near Verde Drive about 1 a.m. when a vehicle struck his Trek mountain bike from behind.

Byas was thrown from the bike and died on the scene from an apparent spinal injury, police said.

Later in the morning, officers identified Mark L. Doutt, 50, as the driver of the car that hit Byas and arrested him on investigation of an accident causing death and other traffic violations.

Tips played a key role in the case. Officers said two callers led them to a 1988 Buick that had damage consistent with the crash. After finding the car, officers tracked down Doutt, who was being held Saturday in the El Paso County jail on $10,000 bail. Angie Jackson, The Gazette
