The National Weather Service is warning Coloradans to watch for fires and floods today as above average temperatures threaten to swamp some parts of the state with snow melt and dry out other patches.

Temperatures in the Metro Area are expected to climb to 95 degrees this afternoon with a 10 percent chance for overnight showers.

High heat and low humidity mean fire danger for Evergreen, Idaho Springs, South Park, Central City and the Lake George area.

The Weather Service has issued a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today in those locations and cautioned that gusty winds add to the favorable conditions for rapid spread should a fire start.

Meanwhile, flood warnings have gone out for areas around the Cache La Poudre River in Larimer County and Weld County near Greeley.

The Weather Service expects water to rise above 6 feet today and tonight in areas that flood when the river hits 7 feet.

Bike paths along the river near Fort Collins could flood as well as meadows downstream of Greeley.

People along the river banks are urged to use caution and stay clear of areas that could become unstable due to the high flows.

The flood warning will remain in place through at least Wednesday.
