“Barney’s Version”

** 1/2 (out of 4)

“Barney’s Version” is not a movie to be loved from start to finish. I was annoyed by it, then I liked it, then it irritated me, then I liked it a lot. Rosamond Pike’s purity and warmth shine through as the long-suffering wife of Barney (Paul Giamatti), a foul-mouthed, bad-tempered, inconstant TV producer who spends most of his life not knowing how good he has it. In the attempt to cram in as much of Mordecai Richler’s novel as possible, the movie based on it feels overstuffed. R. 2 hours 14 minutes.

“Sucker Punch”

* 1/2 (out of 4)

For even Zack Snyder, this is some nonsense. The director of “300” and “Watchmen” has temporarily abandoned comic books as source material, if not inspiration. Our 20-year-old heroine, Babydoll (Emily Browning), and her younger sister lose their mother. They’re left at the mercy of a cruel stepfather (Gerard Plunkett), who kills the sister and frames Babydoll, then hides her away in a gothic mental hospital. And it only gets weirder from there. PG-13, 2 hours.
