BEIJING — Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir was a no- show Monday in Beijing, missing a face-to-face meeting with his most important ally, Chinese President Hu Jintao. He missed the date, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry claimed, because his airplane did not have permission to fly over Turkmenistan.
Although the Foreign Ministry said Bashir would still come to China this week, the embarrassing incident highlighted the delicacy of hosting a head of state who happens to be an alleged war criminal.
Bashir is under indictment by the International Criminal Court on charges of genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region.
