A juvenile driving a van led police on a 70-mile chase early this morning in southern Colorado, ending with the van ramming a patrol car and shots being fired.

The incident happened early this morning and started in Alamosa, according to a Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office media release.

The van headed out of Alamosa, east on Colorado Highway 160, and it didn’t stop until ramming a patrol car in Walsenburg.

The crash happened about 2 a.m. near the intersection of 5th and Main streets, near the Huerfano County Courthouse.

“During the apprehension of the suspect, shots were fired,” the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the van, who was hit by gunfire, was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that are not life threatening.

No deputies were injured.

The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The case remains under investigation.

The release did not say why the van was pursued out of Alamosa.
