Boulder police want residents and business owners to be aware of several scams currently being run in Boulder and the greater Denver metro area, including one that involves rental housing posted on Craigslist.org and another that involves someone posing on the phone as a health inspector.

In the Craigslist.org post, a high-end house in a good neighborhood was listed as renting for $650 a month. The ad said the family that owned the home was on a church mission in Nigeria and asked interested renters to send first and last month’s rent — $1,300 — to that country, said Boulder police Cmdr. Kim Stewart.

A woman who saw the ad thought it seemed too inexpensive for the area — and a little suspicious — and called police to check on the address and location. Boulder police crime analyst Mel Rhamey looked into it and found that the owners of the house were living there and not trying to rent it.

In another recent case, Stewart said, a restaurant owner got a call from someone claiming to be a county health inspector. The person asked for social security numbers and business license information.
