PARIS — Even if Dominique Strauss- Kahn is cleared of attempted rape charges in New York, the former chief of the International Monetary Fund will still have to face a similar investigation in France.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said Friday it has opened a preliminary investigation into accusations by French novelist Tristane Banon that Strauss-Kahn — long considered a top contender for France’s presidency — tried to rape her.
