Weld County deputies on horseback scoured the area near railroad tracks where a man was found shot to death for clues on Saturday.

A train engineer spotted the body of Armando Mata-Magellanes, 30, at about 8 a.m. near train tracks along Interstate 76 between Lockbuie and Hudson.

“The commander asked for the mounted unit to come down and check the area, which we did yesterday,” said Undersheriff Margie Martinez.

Martinez said she doesn’t know if anything related to the death was found by the search party, which is being investigated as a homicide.

Deputies checked from the railroad right of way to the Interstate for anything of evidentiary value, Martinez said.

Horses were used in the search “because from the higher vantage point you can see the ground better,” she added.

Police said Mata-Magellanes was last seen in a 1983 blue Volkswagen Rabbit. Police would like the public’s help locating the car.
