DENVER—The Denver City Council has repealed a 2008 initiative passed by voters that was intended to impound vehicles driven by illegal immigrants.
Starting Aug. 1, unlicensed drivers will no longer have to pay $2,600 in bonds and fees after police tow their cars.
Under current city laws, it will still be illegal to drive without a license, and people who have their cars towed will still pay a towing fee and a daily fee for vehicles sitting in the impound lot.
The initiative’s backer, Dan Hayes, says the council should honor the voters’ intent.
According to the Denver Post, Denver’s charter allows the City Council to repeal laws approved by voters with a super-majority of nine votes. The repeal passed 9-1.
