Baseball archivists lost one of their best links to Denver’s past when Hal Bradley died July 1 in Denver.
Bradley played first base for the 1941 Denver Bears’ team that compiled a 42-68 record in the Class D Western League. A left-handed hitter, Bradley hit .289 in 105 games, with four home runs and 25 strikeouts. The 1941 Bears played in Merchants Park on South Broadway.
The team was managed by Cobe Jones, who later became a prominent coach in the Denver Parochial League. Team statistics show that Dizzy Dean, a baseball immortal with the St. Louis Cardinals, pitched in two games for the Bears.
Bradley spent most of the World War II years in the Army and participated in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
He came out of Denver South High School, where he was a teammate of Dave Garland. A brother, John Bradley, coached baseball at Littleton High.
Hal Bradley celebrated his 91st birthday June 21. He was a staunch baseball fan and followed the Rockies. Services were Saturday. Irv Moss, The Denver Post
