HOUSTON — Tests on Texas Rangers president Nolan Ryan showed no new heart problems for the Hall of Famer pitcher, who is hospitalized in Houston.
The Rangers said in a statement Monday the 64-year-old Ryan “continues to improve” after undergoing a series of precautionary tests. He is expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two.
The Rangers said Ryan has a pre-existing heart condition that will continue being treated with medication. He had a double-bypass operation in 2000 and has a family history of heart disease. He sought treatment after experiencing discomfort Sunday morning while at his home in Georgetown.
Ryan has more no-hitters (seven) and strikeouts (5,714) than any major-leaguer in history. He’s been running the Rangers since 2008 and became part-owner last summer.
Reyes likely to come off DL today.
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes doubled and played six innings Monday in a rehab game for Single-A Brooklyn. Mets manager Terry Collins said Reyes probably will be activated today in time for the opener of a three-game series against the Cardinals.
Leading the majors with a .354 batting average and 15 triples, Reyes has been sidelined since July 3 with a strained left hamstring.
Hardy signs three-year extension.
Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy signed a three-year extention.
The contract, which is reportedly in the vicinity of $22 million, includes a partial no-trade clause and assures Hardy that he won’t be dealt this season.
Hardy was batting .278 through the weekend and led major-league shortstops with a .994 fielding percentage.
Ortiz, Gregg begin suspensions.
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Orioles closer Kevin Gregg will miss the next three games after having their four-game suspensions reduced after an appeal.
Both players will sit out the three- game series between Baltimore and Boston that began Monday night.
Ortiz and Gregg were given four- game suspensions July 14 after nearly getting into a fight six days earlier at Fenway Park.
• Boston activated left fielder Carl Crawford off the 15-day disabled list.
