FAIRPLAY, Colo.—A Teller County sheriff’s deputy and a detention officer could face misdemeanor child abuse charges for allegedly getting drunk and leaving four children unsupervised.

Authorities say the children were placed in the care of other adults and the officers were issued summonses on child-abuse charges.

The incident occurred early Saturday. The officers work for Teller County but were arrested at a residence in adjacent Park County, west of Colorado Springs. A Park County news release didn’t list the officers’ names but said they were intoxicated when a Park County deputy responded to a report of an unresponsive man.

Teller County authorities referred questions to Park County. Park County Sheriff Fred Wegner didn’t immediately return an after-hours message.

Authorities didn’t release the children’s ages or specify their relationship to the officers.
