Colorado Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp’s wife, Kim Kopp, died this morning after a three year battle with cancer.
Kopp, 37, was diagnosed with cervical cancer three years ago, and at the end of the first year, Kopp went into remission, according to a news release.
But the relief was short lived. One year later, doctors told Kopp that she had a rare form of cancer called, Small Cell Carcinoma on the Perimetrium, a form of cancer doctors knew little about.
“She shared her faith, humor, courage and it was easy to see what incredible strength she had,” Mike Kopp said in a statement. “That strength came from Jesus Christ, whom Kim followed throughout her life.”
Kim Kopp is survived by her husband and the couple’s four children; Meghan, Ethan, Allie-Grace and Soren.
“Kim’s spirit and life will continue through the creation of Kimmy’s Hope Foundation – a new foundation which will focus on finding a cure for Small Cell Carcinoma,” Mike Kopp said.
Kopp was elected to the Colorado legislature in 2006. He represents Senate District 22, which includes southern Jefferson County.
