DENVER—Supporters of a proposal to increase funding for public education in Colorado have delivered their petitions to the Secretary of State’s office.

Proponents say they turned in more than 142,000 signatures Monday. The Secretary of State’s office will determine whether at least 86,105 of the signatures are valid before the measure can appear on the November ballot.

State Sen. Rollie Heath says he hopes the initiative he is proposing would at least shore up some funding for public schools and higher education while deeper changes to education are decided.

The initiative would raise Colorado’s income and sales taxes, collecting about $3 billion over five years.
