FORT COLLINS — It was just the way Steve Fairchild likes it and expects it to be.

The Colorado State football coach, preparing for his fourth season with the Rams, was more than pleased with Day 1 of fall practice.

“I thought we flew around pretty good, and that is to be expected with the first day of practice,” said Fairchild, whose team opens the season on Sept. 3 in Albuquerque against New Mexico. “Everybody was excited to get out here and get started. Our main task, when you break it down, is we got six practice opportunities prior to media day and we need to get the most out of those six.”

The Rams are coming off a 3-9 campaign in 2010, 2-6 in the Mountain West, and have a constant in the most important position on the field. Sophomore quarterback Pete Thomas is the first returning starter at the position in the Fairchild era.

The big question offensively is at running-back. A stable of backs, led by senior Raymond Carter — who is No. 1 on the depth chart — and sophomore Chris Nwoke needs to provide that punch the Rams haven’t seen since the Gartrell Johnson days.
