Louie Byrd’s bid to make the U.S. Olympic boxing team is likely over. The 108-pounder from Denver lost 33-29 on Thursday to Santos Vasquez of Sparks, Nev., in the challengers bracket at the Olympic Trials in Mobile, Ala.

Byrd, a four-time Golden Gloves champion and two- time U.S. national champ, was eliminated from the challengers bracket. Byrd still could punch a ticket to the London Games, but only if the Vasquez-Eros Correa winner fails to qualify internationally at the World Championships. In that case, the spot will reopen at the 2012 U.S. National Championships.

Also on Thursday, Amir Imam of Albany, N.Y., eliminated Fort Carson’s Samuel Vasquez at 152 pounds, 31-23.

And Fort Carson heavyweight Andrew Shepherd lost to San Francisco’s Laron Mitchell on a medical disqualification.
