A man accused of assaulting his girlfriend and then setting her home on fire turned himself in to Denver police Saturday.
Chad Alonzo, 24, was arrested on charges of first degree arson and third degree assault-domestic violence. He was in the Downtown Denver Detention Center Sunday morning, awaiting his first court appearance.
At 3:30 a.m. Friday, officers were called to 3800 W. 18th Ave., on of domestic violence in an apartment, according to a release from the Denver Police Department. When police arrived, the apartment was on fire.
Police said that a woman and Alonzo were involved in a physical fight before Alonzo allegedly set the apartment on fire and ran away.
When firefighters arrived, the apartment was consumed by flames, said Lt. Phil Champagne, spokesman for the Denver Fire Department.
Crews extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes and prevented the fire from spreading into the seven other units at the complex, Champagne said. No one was injured.
The unit where the blaze started was heavily damaged, and two other units in the complex were damaged by smoke, he said.
Witnesses said there was a gathering of people at the apartment Thursday night, Champagne said.
