ASHBURN, Va. — Redskins tight end Chris Cooley sat out practice Wednesday because of a sore left knee.
Cooley, who made 77 catches for 849 yards last season, aggravated the knee last week and had fluid drained from it. He has been ruled out for Friday’s preseason opener against the Steelers.
“There is concern,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “The knee is sore. He’s getting treatment and hopefully he keeps getting better.”
Umenyiora showing form
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora is showing signs he might be ready to practice with the Giants.
For the first time in almost a week, Umenyiora worked with team trainers at practice, simulating snap counts. The 29-year-old, who hasn’t practiced since reporting to training camp a day late July 30, got down in his stance and made pass-rushing moves during his session.
Umenyiora looked explosive coming off the ball during the roughly 5- to 10-minute workout, showing no signs that his left knee was bothering him.
Eagles land WR Smith
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Eagles agreed to terms with former Giants receiver Steve Smith on a one-year deal.
Smith, 26, had 220 catches for 2,386 yards and 11 touchdowns in four seasons with the Giants. He suffered a season-ending left knee injury in the Giants’ victory over the Vikings on Dec. 13 and had microfracture surgery eight days later.
“I think I’m pretty close,” Smith said. “I think I can realistically be out there (the first month). It could be week one. You never know.”
