Mountain West volleyball coaches pick Colorado State to win another conference championship

In a preseason poll announced Tuesday, Mountain West volleyball coaches picked Colorado State, ranked No. 15 nationally, to win a third consecutive conference championship and 13th overall.

CSU received five first-place votes from the coaches. New Mexico received the other three.

CSU middle blocker Megan Plourde, a junior from Somerset, Wis., who led the Mountain West in blocks last season, was named preseason player of the year.

Wyoming outside hitter Jodi Purdy of Winterset, Iowa, made the preseason all-conference team.

Pioneers second in MPSF poll.

The University of Denver men’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason poll. The defending regular-season champion Pioneers, who return 17 lettermen, received one first- place vote in the poll. Cal State Bakersfield, the No. 1 team in the MPSF poll, received five first-place votes. Air Force was picked to finish seventh.

Mines hires head coach.

Jerod Goodale is the new baseball coach at Colorado Mines.

Goodale was an all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference catcher at Fort Hays State in 2003 and 2004. He coached the past two seasons as an assistant at Angelo (Texas) State. He also was an assistant on the Wichita State coaching staff from 2007-09.

Eagles pick up DU product.

The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL acquired former University of Denver forward Anthony Maiani in a trade with the Wheeling Nailers for future considerations.

Maiani played in one regular-season game and three playoff games last season for Wheeling after completing his DU career. He had 34 goals and 92 assists (126 points) in 158 games with the Pioneers.
