On Tuesday, by 2 p.m. Mountain time to be exact, the Broncos and every other team in the league must cut their rosters to 80 players.
That means they each will cut at least 10. Because the Broncos play Saturday and then practice again Monday and Tuesday before a Thursday night game in Arizona to close out the preseason, it’s difficult to believe they would wait until Tuesday to make those cuts.
So folks can likely expect some or all of the moves Sunday or Monday morning.
And there could me more before the team takes the field in the preseason finale, because the waiver wire will be of great interest for a team battling serious depth issues.
Several scouts who have seen the Broncos, either in person or via video this preseason, say the dropoff between a fairly talented group of starters overall and the backups is immense and that the dropoff between the No. 2s and No. 3s at many spots could be even bigger.
That kind of issue is difficult to overcome in just one offseason and is a testament to just how depleted the roster was at the end of last year’s 4-12 finish.
The Broncos will get another dip in the waiver wire pool when rosters go to 53 players the week before the regular season begins. So for many of the Broncos players who have sweated their way through training camp, it won’t be enough to make the first cut to 53 because reinforcements will be added.
And after viewing all of the practices and talking to many pro personnel executives, here are the most likely spots where the Broncos add somebody else’s cuts in the coming two weeks:
Their league brethren expect the Broncos to be very active here, especially for players who fit coach John Fox’s desire to be a power-run team.
The concern for the Broncos is that they didn’t have enough depth to cover for injuries before Warren got hurt. They’re even thinner now.
Especially if a bigger back — 225-230 pounds or so — with some draft pedigree comes free.
And defensive coaches — Fox would be one of those — never believe they have enough corners.
