Grand Junction’s statement win over Highlands Ranch on Friday night has the Tigers sitting as the second-ranked team in Class 5A.
Grand Junction, which put up more than 400 yards , was No. 4 last week and fifth in the preseason. The Tigers are No. 2, behind Mullen, in this week’s Denver Post media poll.
Highlands Ranch, meanwhile, fell out of the ranking from No. 10 and was replaced by ThunderRidge — a 49-28 winner over Chatfield to open its season Thursday.
Pomona was the other big mover in the 5A ranks, going from tenth to seventh after a 34-12 win over Cherry Creek.
Chaparral fell three spots to No. 8 after a 27-0 loss to No. 1 Mullen, which got every first-place vote for the third poll in a row.
4A also had a unanimous top-ranked team again — Valor Christian (2-0). But that ranking also welcomed two new teams: Pueblo West (No. 8), which beat previous No. 8 Dakota Ridge 14-7, and Greeley West (No. 9), a 42-15 winner over Montbello.
Castle View also bumped up three spots to No. 7.
Erie debuted at No. 9 in 3A, replacing Elizabeth, the team it beat on Friday. Elizabeth, 3A’s preseason No. 1, dropped out after falling to 0-2 to start the season.
Bennett (ninth) and Coal Ridge (tenth) joined the 2A ranking.
There were two new faces in 1A: Resurrection Christian (No. 9) and Wiggins (No. 10). A third team, Yuma, rejoined the ranking at eighth after dropping out last week.
Granada (eighth), Simla (ninth) and West Grand (tenth) joined the 8-man ranking, while Deer Trail (fouth) and Hi-Plains (fifth) joined 6-man.
Full rankings are below.
