ANAHEIM, Calif. — Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has been shut down for at least three days because of a troublesome left thumb that has been hindering him for the past three weeks.

“I’m not sure what happened. It’s just sore to a point where I can’t do real damage out there to help the team win,” Rodriguez said before Saturday night’s game against the Angels.

The 36-year-old Rodriguez is a 14-time all-star that has been limited to 90 games, much of that because of arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He is hitting .284 with 15 homers and 56 RBIs.

Sox’s Youkilis remains sidelined

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis will be out until at least Tuesday because of bursitis in his left hip.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said that Youkilis, who returned to Boston on Friday for an MRI exam, will miss the final two games of the weekend series with the Rays.

“He stayed back,” Francona said. “He’s a little sore. We’ll see where he’s at Tuesday.”

Weeks is ready

MILWAUKEE — Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks pinch hit against the Phillies and manager Ron Roenicke says the all-star could return to the starting lineup as early as today if he has no lingering soreness.

Earlier, Weeks saw about 30 pitches from rookie Mike Fiers in a simulated game before Milwaukee took on Philadelphia and ran to first several times as he continued to recover from a severely sprained left ankle he suffered July 27.

Footnotes.

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is symptom-free and cleared to exercise after a concussion suffered Wednesday when he was hit in the head by a pitch.

• The Athletics recalled catcher Landon Powell from Triple-A Sacramento.

• Yunel Escobar left the Blue Jays’ game against the Orioles after he was struck on the left elbow by a pitch from Rick VandenHurk in the second inning.
