“Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop”
** 1/2 stars (out of four) | Contractually prohibited from TV, radio, online appearances after NBC and he parted ways, former “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien took his show on the road. Director Rodman Flender provides a fly-on-the- wall view of the 32-city tour. So what can you expect to learn? A perfectionist, Conan can’t stop working, can’t stop seeking an audience and can’t stop complaining about losing his gig at NBC. R. 1 hour, 29 minutes. Lisa Kennedy, The Denver Post
“Hesher”
*** 1/2 stars (out of four) | You can read the story as a psychological fable, with T.J. as the questing ego, Hesher as the uninhibited id and Paul as the disapproving, controlling superego, all learning to cooperate. Or you can just kick back and take it on the level of a wild, gritty, slyly funny Los Angeles fable. R. 1 hour, 45 minutes. Colin Covert, McClatchy/Tribune News
“Incendies”
*** 1/2 stars (out of four) | A dead mother with a past and twins charged with untangling it gives director Denis Villeneuve’s tremendous drama its epically tragic dimensions. The director’s gift for the vivid and visceral allots “Incendies” a humbling beauty. Mainly set in an unnamed land that resembles the civil-war-riven Lebanon, the story moves back and forth in time as Jeanne (Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin) tries to make sense of the brutal life of mother Nawal (Lubna Azabal). Based on Lebanese exile Wajdi Mouawad’s play. In French and Arabic with English subtitles. R. 2 hours, 10 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Meek’s Cutoff”
*** 1/2 stars (out of four) | Director Kelly Reichardt has been called a minimalist and a neo-neo-realist. This beautifully spare saga set in 1845 makes it clear the she’s an artist, as willful as she is thoughtful. Michelle Williams portrays Emily Tetherow. She and husband Solomon are one of three couples beginning to doubt guide Stephen Meeks will deliver them to Oregon. From the opening, the pioneers wrestle with existential challenges, then face an ethical one when Meeks captures an Indian. PG. 1 hour, 44 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Thor”
** 1/2 stars (out of four) | It’s hammer time as the titular Norse deity, portrayed with humor — ill and charming — by Aussie Chris Hemsworth, is banished to Earth by dad Odin (Anthony Hopkins). This comic-book flick has battles aplenty and arcs of lightning, befitting the god of thunder. Sadly, the electricity between Thor and astrophysicist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is static at best. PG-13. 1 hour, 30 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
