ORANJESTAD, Aruba — A lawyer who defended Casey Anthony against murder charges in Florida said Tuesday he will help a U.S. businessman jailed in Aruba in the presumed death of the man’s travel companion.

Jose Baez said he has been retained to defend Gary Giordano on the Dutch Caribbean island. He declined to provide details on his role in the case.

Giordano’s Aruban lawyer, Michael Lopez, said Giordano’s father hired Baez, who was the lead defense attorney for Anthony in her trial on charges of killing her 2-year-old daughter. Anthony was acquitted in the death but convicted of four charges of lying to police.

In Aruba, Baez can serve in an advisory role, but he cannot argue in court, Lopez said.

Giordano has been jailed for nearly a month as authorities believe he was involved in the presumed death of Rob yn Gardner, 35, of Frederick, Md. He says she was swept out to sea while snorkeling. The Associated Press
