An inmate who headed the anti-government Montana Freemen was found unresponsive Tuesday morning in his Supermax prison cell and pronounced dead.
Leroy M. Schweitzer, 73, appears to have died of natural causes, according to a Federal Correctional Complex media release. An autopsy has been ordered.
Schweitzer was serving a 22-year sentence for conspiracy to commit bank robbery, wire fraud, failure to file tax returns and fugitive possession of a firearm, among other charges. He had been behind bars in Florence since August 2006.
FBI agents arrested Schweitzer in 1996, sparking an 81-day standoff in Montana.
