DENVER—The Colorado Department of Transportation wants to ramp up spending on interstate highway projects.
The Transportation Commission on Wednesday offered strong backing for spending $60 million on a plan to widen Interstate 70 to ease mountain congestion. The department wants to widen the highway to three eastbound lanes between Idaho Springs and the base of Floyd Hill east of the Twin Tunnels and to enlarge the eastbound bore of the tunnels.
According to the Denver Post, the state is also considering contributing about $31 million for another phase of reconstruction of Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs. The state is asking local officials to contribute about $5 million for the project.
