The Denver-Aurora-Broomfield metropolitan area ranked 13th for public-transportation usage in 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.

The bureau said 59,240 workers 16 and older commuted to work by public transportation in the Denver metro area in 2009, or about 4.9 percent.

The agency said more than three-quarters of the nation’s workers drove alone to work and took an average of 25.1 minutes to get there.

The average commute in the Denver area was slightly longer, 26.8 minutes, according to the agency.

However, the report said among the top 10 metro areas for commutes to work by bicycle in 2009 were Fort Collins-Loveland, which ranked third, and Boulder, which ranked fourth.

The bicycle-commuting rate in Fort Collins-Loveland was 5.6 percent, and the rate in Boulder was 5.4 percent.

While the Denver area had a commute time that was slightly above average, one of the shortest commute times was Cheyenne, which ranked seventh among the shortest commutes at 15.9 minutes.

The Census Bureau said that at the national level, 5 percent of commuters used public transportation in 2009.
