The United States rugby team was no match for the third-ranked team in the world as the USA Eagles lost 67-5 Friday to Australia in pool play at the Rugby World Cup in Wellington, New Zealand.

The Eagles, who play test matches at Infinity Park in Glendale, fell to 1-2 in the tournament with one game to play, Tuesday against Italy.

U.S. coach Eddie O’Sullivan saw a mixed bag in the walloping the Eagles took from the Wallabys.

“In the second period Australia was able to increase the tempo and pulled away,” he said. “The score line was harsh for the effort we exerted, and we were severely punished for any error we made.”
