Skype WiFi allows you to access more than 1 million Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide and pay for Internet usage based on the time you spend online rather than the amount of data you download.
If you’re planning to travel abroad and already have a preloaded Skype account, this could be a good option. I used Skype WiFi on a recent trip to South Korea and it worked fairly well, in large part because Wi-Fi hotspots are pretty much available everywhere in Seoul. I connected to the Internet via NESPOT, a Wi-Fi network operated by Korea Telecom.
To connect, you first must scan the available networks for compatible hotspots, which are listed in the app and on . After choosing a compatible hotspot, load up the Skype WiFi app to connect to the Internet. It costs about 16 cents a minute, or roughly $10 an hour. My connection times ranged from two to nine minutes. On several occasions, the app couldn’t establish a connection with the hotspot. Sometimes restarting my iPhone solved the problem.
If you want to make Internet phone calls, you’ll need to download the standard Skype app. Both apps are available for free in the iTunes store and work with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
