NEW YORK — With one round of cancellations behind them and more significant ones looming without a new labor deal soon, representatives for NBA players and owners will meet today and perhaps Wednesday for talks aimed at ending the lockout.
The union canceled a regional meeting with players today in Miami so its negotiators can meet with league officials in New York, a person familiar with the plans told The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the details are supposed to remain confidential.
The bargaining session, which was first reported by , comes just days after the league postponed training camps and canceled all 43 preseason games scheduled for Oct. 9-15.

NHL suspends two players for hits
NEW YORK — The NHL came down hard on two players for illegal hits in a preseason game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild.
Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski was suspended for the rest of the preseason and the first eight regular-season games for a right-arm blow to the head of Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck after the horn sounded at the end of regulation in Friday’s game.
Wild forward Brad Staubitz was suspended the rest of the preseason and the first three regular-season games for an illegal check from behind that sent Columbus’ Cody Bass into the glass.
• Forward David Perron rejoined the St. Louis Blues more than 10 months after he was knocked out of hockey by a concussion.
• The Montreal Canadiens signed defenseman Chris Campoli to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.
• The Buffalo Sabres assigned 14 players, including 2009 first-round draft pick Zack Kassian, to their AHL affiliate in Rochester.
Sharapova advances
TOKYO — Maria Sharapova defeated Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-2, 7-5 in a second-round match at the Pan Pacific Open.
Also advancing were seventh-seeded Marion Bartoli of France and two top Serbians, eighth-seeded Jelena Jankovic and 12th-seeded Ana Ivanovic.
