“Carlos”
*** 1/2 stars (out of four) | Created as a miniseries for French TV, “Carlos” is director Olivier Assayas’ attempt to work on the operatic scale of “The Godfather.” It follows the Venezuelan-born Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, code-named Carlos (the media dubbed him “Carlos the Jackal”). For all its gargantuan ambition, the film moves like a greyhound out of the gate, fleet and assured and focused on the business at hand. It’s a subtle, ultimately staggering portrayal whose echoes extend to the Brando-esque swagger of the leading man, Édgar Ramírez. Unrated. 2 hours, 55 minutes. Ty Burr, The Boston Globe
“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”
** 1/2 stars (out of four) | It’s not faint praise to say the latest “Transformers” sequel is far better than the first. But hardly is that a rave. This outing uses the 1960s U.S.-Soviet space race as its jumping-off point (the Autobots beat everyone) while catching us up on life of robot ally Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf). He’s unemployed. He has a new girlfriend. (Ciao, Megan Fox; hello model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.) Also new to this outing: a funny John Malkovich and officious Frances McDormand. Not so new: the impressive then oppressive action sequences director Michael Bay always places above authentic storytelling. PG-13. 2 hours, 34 minutes. Lisa Kennedy, The Denver Post.
