A multi-vehicle accident caused by a slick substance on the road shut down all lanes of Interstate 70 eastbound in Jefferson County for more than two hours Monday morning.

The accident happened at 5:55 a.m. near Garrison Street when an unknown vehicle dumped a “dirt and oily mix” on the highway, said Lt. Mark Cooney, of the Wheat Ridge Police Department. The slick substance caused three motorcycles to go down. That caused a chain reaction as other drivers swerved to avoid them.

Cooney said about 10 vehicles were involved, plus the three motorcycles. Seven people were taken to local hospitals. None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening, Cooney said. The truck that lost the load did not stop.

The slick substance also caused a motorcycle crash on Interstate 76 in Adams County, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The driver of the motorcycle was released from the hospital with scrapes and bruises.

The state patrol said the suspect vehicle is likely a commercial vehicle with a dump bed-style trailer. Anyone with information on the incident, including a description of the suspect vehicle, is asked to call the Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4501. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
