Gaga over McGahee.
During training camp, you and Woody Paige were the only ones in the Denver media saying Willis McGahee was better than Knowshon Moreno for the John Fox system.
We’ve seen what McGahee can do. Now, do you think he’ll keep it up for the rest of the season? When Moreno gets healthy, will this be more of a running back by committee? Should I just drop Moreno in my redraft league? I have a chance to pick up Patriots rookie RB Stevan Ridley off the waiver wire.
Andre, Lakewood
Lammey: Fox wanted to build a sophisticated ground game, and McGahee is simply the best back to do that. In four games, he has twice topped 100 yards rushing — the same number of 100-yard rushing games that Moreno has in the last two seasons as the Broncos’ featured runner. It’s time for the team to move forward with McGahee as the primary ballcarrier, and I think he can keep it up for the rest of the season.
He has fresh legs after backing up Ray Rice in Baltimore for the last three years. Moreno has a place on the team, but it’s as a change-of-pace runner and receiver out of the backfield. Feel comfortable dropping Moreno and picking up Ridley. He’s a power back with deceptive speed.
QB or not QB.
I’m in trouble because of the bye week, and I need your help picking my starting QB. I have been starting Cowboys QB Tony Romo every week and have Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb as my backup. Should I start Kolb this week vs. the Vikings or go to the waiver wire and add Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson, who is coming off a big game?
Lawrence, Castle Rock
Lammey: Jackson and WR Sidney Rice have brought the Seahawks’ passing game to life. I still see Kolb as the better starting option this week because of the matchup. The Cards are playing a Vikings defense that is stout against the run but weak against the pass — Minnesota’s pass D ranks 28th in the NFL, giving up 286.2 yards per game. They couldn’t even stop Chiefs QB Matt Cassel last week, so it’s unlikely they’ll shut down Kolb this week. The Seahawks should come back to earth facing a Giants pass defense that has more INTs than passing TDs allowed.
Breaking out.
I need your opinion on some breakout players from last week. Will 49ers WR Michael Crabtree, Redskins RB Ryan Torain and Cowboys WR Laurent Robinson continue to be productive this year?
Taylor, Brighton
Lammey: Crabtree had another foot injury that prevented him from playing in the preseason, but we saw him show up big-time for the 49ers last week. He has lacked chemistry with QB Alex Smith before, but they looked like they were on the same page against the Eagles.
Torain has been a Mike Shanahan favorite since he was picked by the Broncos in the 2008 draft. Injury is the only thing that will prevent Torain from holding his job as the featured back in Washington.
Robinson has bounced around the league but seems to have found a home with the Cowboys. He has earned the trust of Romo, but his role could diminish when Miles Austin comes back from his hamstring injury. So, of the players you’ve listed, I think Crabtree has the most staying power.
