An alleged drunken driver who police say ran a red light Monday night and caused a fatal accident was formally charged Friday.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey formally charged Johnny Hockaday, 28, with four felony counts, including vehicular homicide and vehicular assault-DUI.

Police say Hockaday was speeding on westbound East 13th Avenue and ran a red light at Washington Street. Hockaday’s Audi broadsided a PT Cruiser driving on Washington Street.

The PT Cruiser rolled and landed on its roof, trapping motorist Roland Stith, 64, inside.

When the Audi came to a stop, the driver got out and ran, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. Witnesses later pointed out the Audi driver to police.

Stith was pronounced dead after being extricated from the car.

Hockaday remains in custody in the Denver Detention Center. His bail has been set at $100,000.
