Former President George W. Bush, who canceled a roundtable meeting with Get Smart Schools in February, will make up for the missed appearance Thursday.
Bush will give brief remarks and meet with a small group of education leaders, Mayor Michael Hancock and Denver Public Schools Superintendent Tom Boasberg at Get Smart Schools headquarters in Denver.
In April, Get Smart Schools signed a contract with the Dallas-based George W. Bush Institute’s Alliance to Reform Education Leadership to examine how principals are trained and evaluated.
This is the institute’s first partnership with an agency.
Get Smart Schools is a local nonprofit that trains leaders to become principals at innovation or charter schools. Get Smart Schools also will develop a national certification program for principals.
The Bush Institute launched the Alliance to Reform Education Leadership in 2010 and aims to improve the performance of school principals, according to a release from the organization.
The initiative is working to create a nationwide network to change the way school districts identify, recruit, prepare and evaluate leaders.
Bush canceled the February trip because it was combined with a keynote speech he was to make at the Young Presidents’ Organization conference. Bush backed out of that speech after learning that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange would be speaking at the same conference.
