An autopsy report did not reveal what killed 10-month-old Adam Gonzalez in August, but it does offer details about the events leading up to his death.
On the morning of Aug. 5, Adam was found dead in an apartment in the 800 block of Tennyson Street, after his mother reported the infant was not breathing.
Soon after, Amanda Lujan, 24, the boy’s mother, and Frances Garcia, 23, were arrested. Police describe Garcia as Lujan’s girlfriend.
According to an autopsy report from the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, Adam was swaddled in a blanket, placed on the floor of a bedroom closest with a pillow under his head and a bottle propped in his mouth. A blanket was also reportedly placed over his head.
Adam reportedly woke up early that morning and started crying. Garcia then gave Adam a bottle — possibly prepared by Lujan. She put the bottle in his mouth, threw the blanket over his head, closed the closet door and returned to bed, the report said.
Later that morning, Lujan and Garcia called police when they found Adam unresponsive, laying on his back or right side with a blanket over his head.
Adam was declared dead at the scene.
While a cause of death was not determined, asphyxia and suffocation were not ruled out.
On Aug. 7, Garcia and Lujan were advised of their charges. Garcia faces charges of murder and child abuse and Lujan is facing a charge of accessory to murder.
