DENVER—Police had three previous contacts with the family of a Colorado boy allegedly kept locked in his room—including one following a dog mauling. But they say there was no sign of abuse until now.

The 14-year-old was found hiding under a neighbor’s porch in Erie after his mother and boyfriend—Amanda Joliff and Richard Smith—left on a trip to New York. He told police that he usually only ate four meals a week, allegations first reported by the Greeley Tribune.

Police Lt. Lee Mathis said Friday that a boy was mauled by a dog there in February 2007 but said he couldn’t comment on whether it was the same boy.

Joliff and Smith are in jail and couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
