A second child injured in a weekend house fire died from her injuries early Tuesday, Aurora police said.
Alivia Ramirez, 2, and her brother Timothy Joseph Ramirez, 3, were pulled from the burning home by police officers early Sunday morning.
Timothy died on the way to Children’s Hospital. Alivia was hospitalized until her death around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.
The Aurora Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit and the Aurora Fire Department are investigating the fire as a possible case of child neglect.
Police have not said where the children’s mother was when the blaze broke out around 5 a.m.
When police arrived on the scene, she was outside the home, distraught and yelling for help. Officers had to pry iron security bars off the window to the bedroom where the children were because they couldn’t get in through either a front or a back door.
One neighbor said when she saw the mother, whom police have not identified, she was dressed in street clothes.
Officers have been called to the home at 12685 E. 13th Ave. on prior occasions but have declined to say why or how many times they were there.
Neighbors said they had seen Timothy running around outside unattended several times prior to Sunday’s fire, including during last week’s snowstorm.
