Twenty-two Halloween zombies in Durango were on the prowl for bail, not brains, today after an overnight of the living dead turned too lively.

The estimated 1,500-zombie herd failed to get a permit from the city for the event, to begin with. Then, instead of chowing down on the human flesh, they tossed trash cans, bottles, sticks and stones at officers.

The moaning mob also damaged cars and trucks, parking meters and flower planters, Durango police said today. Some complied after police used pepper spray.

“Numerous requests were made by officers instructing the participants to move from the street and onto sidewalks,” the department stated.

The arrests included six females and 16 males ranging in age between 17 and 50 years old.

“Most of the arrests were for failing to disperse, obstructing a roadway, disorderly conduct, and obstructing an officer — all misdemeanor offenses.

One downtown walker, Brandon Friend, 20, of Durango, was charged with a felony assault on a peace officer.

A 17-year-old boy, who was not named because he is a juvenile, was charged with felony menacing, possession of a dangerous or illegal weapon and underage consumption of alcohol.

City crews worked until 4 a.m. to clean up the mess.
