ST. LOUIS — Bob Forsch, the only pitcher in Cardinals history to throw two no-hitters, died Thursday at his home near Tampa, Fla. He was 61.
The cause of death wasn’t immediately known.
The death came less than a week after Forsch threw out the first pitch at Game 7 of the World Series.
Forsch won 20 games in 1977 and had a career record of 168-136 with a 3.76 ERA. Forsch threw no-hitters in 1978 (Phillies) and 1983 (Expos).
His older brother, Ken Forsch, threw a no-hitter for the Astros in 1979, making them the only brothers in major-league history to pitch official no-hitters.
Thome, Phillies reach deal
CLEVELAND — Jim Thome agreed to sign a free-agent contract with the Phillies.
Thome’s $1.25 million, one-year deal is contingent on passing a physical.
In 324 plate appearances with the Twins and Indians last season, he batted .256 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs.
Footnotes.
The Diamondbacks extended the contracts of general manager Kevin Towers and manager Kirk Gibson for three years, through at least 2014.
• The Cubs are scheduled to interview Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum on Monday and expect to bring in Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux next week. Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin had an interview with Chicago’s new management team Friday.
