Retired Air Force Gen. John Lorber was elected Friday to be chairman of the newly named corporation board of directors at the Air Force Academy.

Lorber, who scored the first Air Force touchdown in Falcon Stadium as a player in 1962, will direct the new board in fundraising and oversight functions in the area of the academy’s nonprofit operation.

“This board allows us to operate some parts of our athletic department away from the strict government guidelines and rules,” said Jim Trego, associate athletic director at Air Force.

The academy is in the process of gaining more alumni support for development of its sports programs. A new indoor practice facility that opened in the summer was gained mostly through private funding.

Theo Gregory, an associate vice president of the Colorado Springs-based El Pomar Foundation, was named vice chairman.
