Denver police are looking for Peter Edward VanVolkinburg, who is accused of injuring a police officer and running away with handcuffs dangling from his right wrist today.

VanVolkinburg, 32, was pulled over by an officer about 10 a.m. at 29th and Downing streets on suspicion he had driven away from a traffic accident.

When the officer tried to put handcuffs on him, VanVolkinburg put up a fight and the officer suffered a broken hand, police said.

He is being sought tonight on a felony charge of second-degree assault to a police officer.

VanVolkinburg has been arrested numerous times, including several drug-related charges. He also has a Dec. 8 court date in El Paso County in relation to a May 7 incident, court records show.

In that case, he is accused of burglary, burglary with explosives, use of a stun gun, car theft, menacing and assault. He was sentenced to five years in state prison in 2007 in Denver for cooking meth. He was given credit for 142 days of time served before his conviction.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to VanVolkinburg’s arrest.
