DENVER—Two parcels that the Bureau of Land Management plans to offer at its next Colorado oil and gas lease auction in February are for geothermal energy development.

The sale Feb. 9 is slated to offer six parcels in Moffat and Routt counties totaling almost 5,000 acres for oil and natural gas development. But the agency also plans to offer two parcels in Gunnison County for geothermal energy. The geothermal parcels cover a total of about 8,350 acres.

The BLM’s resource management plan for the Gunnison area allows for geothermal leasing, with stipulations to protect geologic hazards like unstable slopes, Gunnison sage-grouse and senior water rights.

Protests of any parcels being put up for auction have to be submitted by 4 p.m. Dec. 12.
