FORT COLLINS — It was not known after Saturday’s game how long Colorado State quarterback Pete Thomas would be out after suffering a sprained left knee early in the second quarter.
“What grade (of sprain) I don’t know,” CSU coach Steve Fairchild said. “As he gets looked at (today) and probably into Monday, we’ll have an idea of how long he’s out.”
Said Thomas, “Doctors, they think they know what it is, but they’re not for sure.”
If Thomas cannot play next weekend at TCU, freshman Garrett Grayson will get the first start of his career. Fairchild wanted to redshirt Grayson this season.
Now, Grayson is part of the rotation. He finished 6-of-15 for 26 yards and an interception.
“I felt good about it,” Grayson said of his performance. “Once I went in there and was able to get the jitters out of the way, I was being able to read coverages better and everything slowed down quite a bit.”
The offensive line was hit hard again by injuries. This time, starting center Weston Richburg suffered a broken hand. Tackle Paul Madsen suffered an ankle sprain. He had been recovering from a sprained knee.
Herd returns.
After three weeks on the shelf, Colorado State safety Ivory Herd was reinstated to the team.
Herd had been suspended by coach Steve Fairchild after being arrested on a charge of domestic violence.
“We try to hold kids accountable for their actions, and if we have to suspend them for a period of time, we’ll do that,” Fairchild said.
