Coal production was up 25 percent in Colorado and Utah in the third quarter of 2011, compared with the same period in 2010, according to a report by SNL Energy, a financial analysis and data firm.
The Uinta Basin mines — 15 producing mines and two not producing — shipped 12.2 million tons of coal during the quarter, up from 9.7 million in the third quarter of 2010, according to an SNL analysis of U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration data.
